About Us

Welcome to our collaborative platform, borne from the

collective efforts of students enrolled in the

WGS340 "Women and Revolution in the Middle East" course

at the Women and Gender Studies Institute,

University of Toronto, during the winter 2024 semester.

Here, we embark on a journey to share our research,

insights, and critical perspectives, illuminating the

multifaceted narratives of women and queers in the Middle East.

Our goal is to contribute to feminist knowledge production about the Middle East by focusing on the struggles and stories of women and queers who organize, mobilize, write, and create for liberation, actively shaping their own history.

Feminist and queer movements in the Middle East defy simplistic categorization, intricately woven within diverse historical, economic, political, and social landscapes. Our exploration demands nuanced attention to the enduring legacies of colonization, the ongoing influence of Western geopolitical interventions, and the intricate sociopolitical contexts in each country that sustain patriarchal and heteronormative constructs. With a dedicated focus on the resilient histories of feminist and queer resistance, we aim to foster an understanding of the complex past, critical present, and possible futures for women and queers in the Middle East while questioning prevailing Western narratives.
